Sebelius Writes Governors, Schedules National Stakeholder Meetings

Governors received a letter from Secretary Sebelius yesterday urging them to move forward on plans for health insurance exchanges and Medicaid expansion.

New funds were announced on June 29 for states to use until the end of 2014 to establish new health insurance marketplaces, no matter where they are in the process of establishing a marketplace and no matter whether a state plans to run its own exchange or partner with another state or the federal government. The letter urges states to take advantage of these new funds.

Secretary Sebelius reviewed the Supreme Court decision on the Medicaid expansion provisions of the Affordable Care Act. She reminded states' governors the federal government "will completely pay for coverage under the eligibility expansion in 2014-16 and for at least 90 percent of such costs thereafter."

The letter also announces four meetings this summer for state officials and stakeholders to meet with Department of Health and Human Services staff. They are:

  • July 31, Washington, D.C.
  • August 2, Chicago, Ill.
  • August 10: Denver, CO.
  • August 15: Atlanta, GA.
