PhRMA Partners with New York to Support STEM Program in Puerto Rico

CSG Leadership Circle member Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, or PhRMA, made a three-year grant commitment to support science, technology, engineering and math initiatives in a public school in San Juan, Puerto Rico, that sustained severe damage during Hurricane Maria. PhRMA’s STEM Talent Pipeline grant was awarded to the school in November 2019 for the second consecutive year.  Joined by New York City and New York State officials, PhRMA recently led a day of service to help rebuild the school.

The grantee, Escuela República del Perú, will also use the funds to support the construction of a new science lab and extensive rebuilding efforts of the premises.

The STEM Talent Pipeline is a grant program intended to help fund opportunities for students to learn vital skills to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or math fields. There is an ever-growing workforce demand for these skills.

PhRMA’s senior director of advocacy and strategic alliances, Laura McCabe, met with Escuela República del Perú students to discuss the significance of STEM education and its many applications in the biopharmaceutical sector.

“The biopharmaceutical industry is committed to investing in future innovators who will keep America at the forefront of new breakthroughs,” McCabe said. “PhRMA is proud to be a partner in rebuilding a program that is inspiring tomorrow’s STEM leaders. We’re grateful to the dedicated educators here at Escuela República del Perú for their commitment to providing their students with a cutting-edge education.”

Escuela República del Perú Director Hilda Vives conducted the launch event.

“I am extremely grateful and happy, because we really needed this help,” Vives said. “Our students need to use technology in their daily lives and this donation will contribute to their education and their future.”
