Feds Release Tool Kit to Help Legislators Explain Health Insurance Marketplace

October 1, the open enrollment date for Americans to apply for health insurance through the health insurance marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act, is barreling toward us. The marketplaces, also known as health insurance exchanges, are where individuals and small employers can go to compare and buy health insurance. Individuals who qualify for tax subsidies to make insurance more affordable must purchase through their state marketplaces. The open enrollment period for insurance through the marketplaces will run from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Coverage will begin January 1, 2014.

The federal government will run the state marketplaces in 26 states. In the other states, the state is either working in partnership with the federal government or running the exchange independently. This link will take tell consumers how to contact the marketplace for their state. In some cases the state-based marketplaces have price information and other state-specific information available already.
