CSG Director of Education Presents to Montana Joint Committee on Education

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to present to the Montana Joint Committee on Education.  At the invitation of Senator Llew Jones, I spoke to the House and Senate education committee members on Common Core State Standards implementation efforts and related costs.  Amy Starzynski, a partner at the Washington, D.C,-based EducationCounsel, joined me for the discussion on state efforts and promising policies.

Knowing that states continue to struggle with education budgets, Amy and I shared information on ways to utilize dollars more wisely and offered innovative policy actions that the legislature can put in place to give local school districts more flexibility to meet their needs.  Particular policies in curriculum and instruction, assessment systems, the use of time, teacher and leader effectiveness and accountability systems were offered for consideration by the policymakers.

Montana is not alone as they consider implementation of the CCSS with fidelity.  They know that their allocations also need to be reviewed as the common assessments come in 2014.  Along with the Montana Office of Public Instruction, conversations occured around redirecting funds to local school districs to support implementation, reviewing available funds for teacher professional development, discovering opportunities with neighboring states or within the region, and determint the costs of materials and assessments.  A variety of policy action items were shared with the group for their consideration and potential action during the 2013 legislative session.
