CSG Convenes First-Term Legislators in Atlanta to Discuss Education Transformation
CSG's education division hosted the Policy Academy for Newly Elected Legislators in Atlanta on November 15-16, 2011 to discuss transformation and reform in a variety of policy areas. Pulling from CSG's southern region, 22 first-term legislators met with national experts and local educators to learn about:
- Common Core State Standards;
- Common assessments (www.k12.wa.us/smarter/ and http://www.achieve.org/PARCC);
- Changes to state accountability systems; and
- The vital importance of business and education partnerships.
Following the content session, attendees had the opportunity to tour Clairemont Elementary, part of the City Schools of Decatur, to learn more about Expeditionary Learning and hear from teachers and students on student-focused learning. EL schools focus on the 10 design principles including the primacy of self-discovery, the having of wonderful ideas, the responsibility for learning, empathy and caring, success and failure, collaboration and competition, diversity and inclusion, the natural world, solitude and reflection, and service and compassion.
