Associates in Action: American Diabetes Association, Safe at Schools

This session sought to explain diabetes and the disease’s burden on individuals, society, and the health care system and to demonstrate effective state policies to prevent and treat people affected by diabetes and diabetes-related complications. Attendees learned about the state of science around prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. We also discussed new policy initiatives that apply a public health template to diabetes. Successful state policy initiatives were presented by sponsoring legislators and supporting advocates.

Associates in Action: American Diabetes Association, Safe at Schools

Dr. Linda Siminerio
Linda M. Siminerio, R.N., Ph.D., C.D.E., is director of the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, and an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the School of Nursing. Dr. Siminerio’s primary research topics include diabetes education, diabetes translation into community interventions, pediatric diabetes care and education, and the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of diabetes. Siminerio is the chair of the Safe at Schools Task Force of the American Diabetes Association. She is senior vice president for the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and served as chair of the IDF World Congress in 2009. She was the editor-in-chief of Diabetes Forecast, and a past president of Health Care and Education for the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Siminerio received her B.S.N. from Pennsylvania State University, her M.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, and her Ph.D. in health education from Pennsylvania State University.
