At today's meeting of the Idaho House Education Committee I had the opportunity to dialogue with members about rigorous academic standards and competency-based education.  The representatives are investigating opportunities as a result of the Governor's task force on education.  Recommendations were released in September 2013 after eight months of thoughtful research and deliberation by the task force members.

According to Cameron Evans, Microsoft’s U.S. Education Chief Technology Offer, on any given day the corporation has 8,000 vacant jobs due to the lack of a skilled workforce.  These are not highly technical jobs but those that can’t be filled by recent graduates due to the skills gap especially in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. 

Tim Weldon, education policy analyst, and I had the opportunity to meet with Lt. Governor Garcia, state legislators, department of education officials and postsecondary education leaders to discuss innovative state action through policymaking.  Specific recommendations and opportunities were shared to ensure college- and career-readiness and access to and success in postsecondary education.

CSG's Deeper Learning Focus Group is meeting this weekend in Boca Raton, Fla. to discuss financial strategies to implement innovation and transformation in K-12 education.  Members represent school administrators, state legislators, state department of education officials, national education agencies, local boards and state board of education members.

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to present to the Montana Joint Committee on Education.  At the invitation of Senator Llew Jones, I spoke to the House and Senate education committee members on Common Core State Standards implementation efforts and related costs.  Amy Starzynski, a partner at the Washington, D.C,-based EducationCounsel, joined me for the discussion on state efforts and promising policies.
