SARA to be Highlighted at CSG Annual Meeting

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) will be highlighted at The Council of State Governments’ 2013 National Meeting in Kansas City.  The session is scheduled from 2- 4 p.m. on Friday, September 20.

SARA is intended to simplify and streamline the process for authorizing  postsecondary online courses and degree programs across state lines.  By doing so the drafters hope the agreement will increase access to degree attainment and reduce costs for students, states, and institutions.

“In order to fully realize the benefits of online education, consistency and reasonable uniformity across state lines is necessary” said Marshall Hill, who has been named the new Executive Director of the National Council for SARA. “While the establishment of uniform standards and practices across states  represents a significant change in current state regulation of distance education, institutions, states, and students will benefit substantially if consensus can be achieved” continued Hill.

The presentation in Kansas City is intended to inform policymakers about the new agreement and the potential benefits it can offer states, institutions, and students.  During the session attendees will hear about the need for the need for the agreement, the development process, the specific areas covered by the new interstate agreement, and what steps states and institutions need to take to participate.
