This session sought to explain diabetes and the disease’s burden on individuals, society, and the health care system and to demonstrate effective state policies to prevent and treat people affected by diabetes and diabetes-related complications. Attendees learned about the state of science around prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. We also discussed new policy initiatives that apply a public health template to diabetes. Successful state policy initiatives were presented by sponsoring legislators and supporting advocates.

Rep. Tom Murry
Rep. Tom Murry is a pharmacist and attorney from North Carolina. He is a pharmacist manager at an independently-owned pharmacy in Raleigh. Before his election to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2010, Dr. Murry was an at-large member of the Morrisville Town Council for five years. In his first House term, Murry was the primary sponsor of numerous bills involving medical or health care issues in North Carolina. Rep. Murry attended the University of Arkansas to earn his pharmacy degree and Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C., for his law degree.
