Longest Serving State Legislators

The longest serving state legislator of all time is currently serving in Wisconsin. Senator Fred Risser has served a total of 59 years in both the state assembly and state senate. He was elected to the assembly in 1956, and served for three terms before being elected to the state senate in 1962, where he is still currently serving. CSG surveyed librarians, archivists, and state historians from all fifty states to determine the longest serving legislator in each. It was confirmed that Risser is the longest serving, with a close second of 56 years by Senator Michael Kinney from Missouri and Senator Hugh M. Gillis, Sr. from Georgia.
