Director of Education to Present Workshop on Common Core Standards

State policymakers confront many challenges associated with the adoption and implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. In an effort to engage state leaders, CSG is conducting a special policy workshop on Monday, Dec. 6, 2-5 p.m., concerning the academic and fiscal implications of adoption and implementation of the common state standards.

CSG has held similar discussions with policymakers around the country, and it's clear there is both a great deal of misinformation and uncertainty about what common core state standards will mean for states and local school districts as well as what steps are critical for successful implementation. Through this meeting, CSG will facilitate a discussion of the issues associated with adoption and implementation in your state helping you in your future decision making. The workshop will be led by CSG Director of Education Policy, Pam Goins.

"State policymakers are key stakeholders in the discussion of adopting and implementing the Common Core State Standards," said Goins. "It’s a significant and historic movement across the country with 36 states and the District of Columbia working from the same expectations for our students.  This interactive session will focus on how these standards can better prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and a career."

This session will take place at the Rhode Island Convention Center as part of CSG's 2010 National Conference, Dec. 3-6. For more information on the conference, including how you can register, visit www.csg.org/events.  For more about the Common Core Standards Initiative, contact Pam Goins.
