CSG Webinar: Prescription Drug Abuse: A Growing Epidemic. March 7, 2012
Staff from CSG’s National Center for Interstate Compacts (NCIC) hosted a webinar highlighting the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse. During the March 7 session participants heard from two subject matter experts about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, state sponsored prescription monitoring programs, and CSG’s efforts to develop a prescription monitoring compact that would allow states to securely share prescription drug data across state lines.
Kansas Senator Vicki Schmidt used her firsthand experience as a pharmacist to speak about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and how states are working to solve the problem through the development of prescription drug monitoring programs. Citing statistics to illustrate just how dangerous an epidemic prescription drug abuse has become, Senator Schmidt noted that the only permanent solution was a state driven system that would allow prescription drug data to be shared on an interstate basis.
Rick Masters, who serves as legal counsel to NCIC, next discussed how the Prescription Monitoring Program Compact developed by CSG would allow states to securely share prescription drug data, while also protecting patient privacy. Mr. Masters addressed the many benefits of a compact, including allowing states to operate their existing PMPs while also retaining all rights and authority to the prescription drug data.
