CSG Holds Common Core State Standards Policy Roundtable in Sacramento
The education policy team at CSG held the Common Core State Standards Policy Roundtable in Sacramento yesterday, July 20. The meeting was held in conjunction with the California Department of Education and funded with generous educational support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
We had about 70 education policymakers at the session, including State Superintendent Jack O'Connell, Undersecretary of Education Kathryn Radtkey Gaither, Deputy Superintendent Deb Sigman, several superintendents, representatives from universities, teachers and PTA. We also had State Senator Bob Huff and several aides and consultants to other senators and assembly members.
An advisory commission in California has recommended the state board adopt both the English language arts and math portions of common core with additions. The state Board of Education will have an up-or-down vote on the recommendation on Aug. 2. Like many of the states where we've held common core meetings, the discussion went in-depth into how to get the information out to stakeholders about standards, which can be confusing to most people outside of education circles. The message we've been hearing consistently, Keep It Simple.
