The United States began ambitious negotiations with the European Union this summer to establish a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP. This partnership would bring together two of the world’s leading economies and estimates suggest the increase in bilateral trade could see a net employment gain of nearly 750,000 jobs for the U.S.

When Indiana Rep. Robert Behning was recently visiting a preschool, one of the instructors cited some alarming statistics.
The teacher pointed to three young African-American students. “She told me, ‘One of the three — if they don’t have the opportunity for a high-quality education in early childhood — [is likely to] end up in the criminal-justice system. Which one are you going to pick?’”
“No one wants to pick any of them,” Behning says. “It is much better for our society to provide early education and an opportunity to be a successful member of our community.”

Following the federal government shutdown, Congress reached a deal to go to budget conference, which it hasn't done for years. Since it's been a while since the traditional budget process was followed, here's a refresher for what is supposed to happen.

Two weeks and a day after the federal government shut down, and the day before a default on the national debt, Senate leadership reached a deal to reopen the government and avoid default. The shutdown was lengthy and, had the government defaulted on its debt, it would have been the first time in history—except for a technical, computer-glitch-inspired default in 1979.

The Senate Judiciary Committee in September considered state initiatives to legalize marijuana within their borders for the first time.
