2012 CSG National Conference

An estimated 26 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, while another 79 million have prediabetes. Policymakers have a real chance to reduce the burden of diabetes on public health care systems, employers and individuals who have the disease. This session  presented a number of promising state policy initiatives, such as partnering with community YMCAs to increase physical activity opportunities, encouraging appropriate care models in schools for children with diabetes and ensuring timely screening for gestational diabetes. State legislators who have championed prevention and treatment, community program managers and others who have joined the battle for better health outcomes spoke during this session.

At the recently concluded National Conference held in Austin, Texas, the CSG Executive Committee approved seven policy resolutions on a wide range of topics, including online gaming, chronic care coordination, securing the Caribbean border, criminal background checks for nurses, economic development in regions impacted by Super Storm Sandy, and electric power grid modernization. 

As the global economy becomes more and more competitive, schools are looking for ways to better prepare students for college and/or the workforce. Some states have found success with various policies and programs. This briefing included a discussion of rigorous academic standards, common assessments, professional development, teacher preparation, time and technology, and state accountability systems. State leaders can determine what will work best based on the needs of individual communities. Experts provided an analysis of existing state policies and offer innovative strategies and solutions to put transformational ideas into practice.
