With state legislative sessions getting ready to gear back up in the New Year, the newly drafted Interstate Medical Licensure Compact continues to receive wide spread endorsement from both state boards and key stakeholder groups.  To date, 17 state medical and osteopathic boards have formally endorsed the Compact, including:

Delegates from the American Medical Association (AMA) formally endorsed the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact at this week’s 2014 AMA Interim Meeting.  The compact, which creates a process for expedited licensing for doctors wishing to practice in multiple states, was developed jointly by the Federation of State Medical Boards, CSG’s National Center for Interstate Compacts, and a drafting team comprised of state medical board officials. 

Voters in Alaska and Oregon voted yesterday to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and over.  The decision brings the number of states which have legalized marijuana to four.  In 2012 both Colorado and Washington voted to legalize recreational marijuana.

Over the last decade public opinion about marijuana seems to have shifted dramatically in favor of reforming and decriminalizing existing state marijuana laws.  In 2012 Colorado and Washington voted to legalize recreational marijuana.  Over 20 other states permit the use of medical marijuana in various forms.    This year voters in several more states will consider ballot initiatives that would legalize marijuana use for recreational or medicinal purposes.  Highlighted below are several key states to watch on election day.
