During our 2012 national conference last December in Austin, a policy resolution was passed promoting smart grid and grid modernization efforts at CSG. The resolution sets up a general framework of important components that should be considered by states when discussing grid modernization initiatives as well as encouraging additional educational outreach work to CSG's membership and interaction with other sister organizations on behalf of states. 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that The Council of State Governments encourages states to continue to evaluate the energy efficiency and demand reduction opportunities that can be achieved with electric utility grid modernization efforts, subject to the unique and specific circumstances that exist in their respective state.

On April 26, CSG held a webinar with policy experts from the Edison Electric Institute on addressing cybersecurity threats in the Smart Grid. EEI is the largest association of U.S. investor-owned utilities and its members provide roughly 70 percent of the nation’s electricity. The webinar’s presenters featured Chris Eisenbrey and Scott Aaronson who are policy experts that focus on Smart Grid issues and policy development.

Energy infrastructure is vital to the nation’s economy and the citizens’ way of life. It supplies the nation with the energy required to conduct its daily operations, from supplying needs for industrial manufacturing to heating homes, running computers and fueling cars. The country requires an efficient energy generation and delivery system to keep the economy functioning smoothly, yet the infrastructure is aging, stressed and underfunded. At the same time, demand for energy continues to grow. States play a vital role in regulating and stimulating the creation of infrastructure, as well as siting new energy infrastructure. State officials are therefore in a position to institute policies that mitigate the infrastructure deficit and ensure energy reliability.
